Weapons, for example, don’t have expendable ammunition but instead an energy charge that you’ll need to remain aware of lest you get caught unable to fire for a couple of seconds while your gun cools down. Rookies will need to get used to the franchise’s defining quirks, though. And – as already mentioned – starfighter combat is just better all around, a visual marvel and a true highlight of the Battlefront II experience. More worlds from across all three eras are represented we’re now provided multiple classes of generic troopers to switch between as we earn points to spawn vehicles, heroes, and villains and multifaceted objectives create multiple phases within each match that feel as though they could have been plucked from one of the films’ complicated major battles. Multiplayer feels much like it did in the original, save that it’s a whole lot bigger. Which brings us to the real reason Battlefront II exists: Competitive play. The only reason I worked my way through most of its challenges was because a good chunk of my pre-release evaluation was spent with empty servers during which time I couldn’t find any people online with whom to play.

It sounds like a good way to acclimate to Battlefront II‘s action, and I suppose it’ll prove useful to series newcomers who want to get their feet wet before heading online, but with the existence of a campaign that already serves much the same purpose I don’t really see its point. It’s also where you can play split-screen co-op or competitive matches, and set up custom battles against hordes of AI bots. Here players take on a series of short challenges designed to familiarize us with various trooper classes as well as the game’s super-powered heroes and villains – Han Solo, Bossk, Rey, Darth Maul, etcetera – while earning various rewards, such as loot crates and credits (more – much more – on this in a bit). Once the campaign ended I moved on to the Arcade mode. These sequences made me fondly remember LucasArts’ old Rogue Squadron games, and in so doing ignited a hope that perhaps this excellent aerial combat could be spun out into a discrete franchise of its own.

There were moments while attacking Star Destroyers and engaged in dogfights that I legitimately felt as though I was experiencing an interactive movie – always the holy grail of games based on films. DICE has done a terrific job revamping Battlefront’s starfighter battles to create a greater sense of scope and spectacle while at the same time improving ship handling and weapons. It feels like little more than training for multiplayer, which, in the end, is really all it is. No puzzles, vanishingly few branching paths, and no memorable set piece moments. Battle scenarios are unimaginative, rarely providing more to do than run a straight path and kill all the enemies we see. And we’re provided opportunities to (briefly) take on the roles of several series favourites along the way, perhaps the most gratifying of which is a Luke Skywalker mission in which the sole remaining Jedi skillfully treads the fine line between boy scout and ass-kicker.īut while the campaign delivers more than I expected from a narrative perspective, the action is less compelling.
